Main Goal
The primary goal of this project was to better integrate library systems into the main library homepage in a way that was more modern and seamless. This page leverages the library service platform’s discovery layer via a fully customized search bar, the library’s scheduling via a SpringShare LibCal widget, and a carousel widget from LibGuides. Under the hood, I implemented content injection via LibGuides mapped content boxes, enabling the CMS to be used as a pseudo back-end for quicker updates from non-admin web staff in the library.
Process
This implementation was quite lengthy due to the large number of stakeholders and web governance policy at the institution. Solid planning and frequent feedback sessions greased the wheels to get implementation complete in 2023.
- Gathered Requirements
- Developed Wireframes
- Created Dev Environment
- Sprint Cycles for Development
- Worked with University Web Team for Code Review
- Regular Feedback Sessions with Internal and External Stakeholders
- Pushed to Prod Environment
- Regular Update/Maintenance
Outcome
The new library home page received a lot of great feedback after implementation. The web team measured increased engagement with resources featured on the page and reference librarians were fielding fewer lower-level reference questions – a direct result of design decisions made during the project. Even though the site has changed since implementation, many features remain.
